General Certificate of Secondary Education. Students typically take 8–10 subjects. IGCSE is the international version, accepted globally. Grades 9–1 (9 is highest). Results determine entry to Sixth Form programmes and quality of university applications.

The UCAS Application — How UK University Applications Work

UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the single centralised system through which all UK undergraduate applications are submitted. You can apply to a maximum of 5 universities in one application. There is no interview for most courses (except Oxbridge and Medicine).

⚠️ The Personal Statement is fundamentally different from US college essays. In the US, you write about yourself — your identity, challenges, growth. In the UK, you write almost entirely about your SUBJECT — why you love it, what you've read, what ideas excite you. Admissions tutors want evidence of genuine intellectual passion, not a list of activities.

Lists of activities with no intellectual connection to the subject. Generic statements ("I have always been interested in..."). Too much focus on personal stories instead of subject passion. Quoting sources without showing your own thinking. Last-minute writing with no revision.
